Find an Easy Way to Optimize Hard Drive Performance

To increase the overall performance of computer’s hard drive, you must optimize the hard disk. On the optimized hard disk, Windows will load up all files or applications very faster. It is a good idea to identify and remove unwanted programs and files from your hard disk. Apart from increasing the free space on your hard drive, it also makes several maintenance utilities such as Disk Defragmenter quicker and easier. To make hard drive run faster, follow below mentioned tips.

  1. Defragment the hard disk: For better performance of the system, all files in the hard drive should be organized in very effective manner. It means physical data on the hard disk should be arranged in continuous way, so that moving parts of the hard drive do not have to move around so much to read or find a single file. But, due to limitations of the file systems, data becomes fragmented, especially for larger files, hard drive takes longer time to find and load up a file. Windows comes out with inbuilt utility called Defragmenter that generally rearranges the entire contents of your hard drive in more efficient manner.

To run the Defragmenter, go to hard drive properties window and go back to the “Tools” tab, then click on “Defragment now” and select “Defragment Disk”. The entire process to complete may take few hours, if you have large disk with more number of files on the hard disk and severe fragmentation.

  1. Checking the hard disk drive for errors: If there is a major issue with the hard disk, then you may encounter some warning message when you attempt to start up the computer. If the computer is shut down incorrectly when the files are being written to the hard drive, errors may occur. If you don’t shut down your computer properly, then your hard disk will be checked for errors automatically, when you start up the computer again. If you are finding that there are some problems with your computer like presence of corrupted files or lack of responsiveness, then it is a good idea to check the hard disk manually at regular intervals of time.

To check hard disk for errors, open the start menu and select “Computer”. Here, you will see all the partitions of your hard drive. There you right click on the respective partition and select “Properties”. Then, click the “Tools” tab and click on “Check now”. Make sure that the first box is checked. Second box can also be checked in order to give the disk a more thorough scan for finding out any physical defects. If the hard disk is larger, then it may take several hours. So, it is a good idea to leave running it for whole night, if you choose this option. When it gets completed, click “Start”. If you are trying to scan the hard disk in which Windows has been installed on, then you will be asked to schedule a disk check to occur next time, when you restart your computer.
